Abstract: Phytodiversity is for man a vital element and a capital which provides for hismultiple needs. This study aims to characterize the floristic diversity and the structure of the woody vegetation of the Mayo-Danay division in the Sudano-Sahelian zone of Cameroon. The transect method was used for the floristic surveys. The experimental deviceconsists of four (04) treatments which are the sub-divisions and three (03) repetitions, or three (03) villages, per treatment. In the savannah ecosystem of each village, a transect (500 m x 20 m) was installed and along each transect, all woody trees with a dbh ≥ 10 cm at 1.30 m are inventoried, the diameter is measured as well as the height. The villages surveyed are as follows: Djelme, Gouma and Nouldaina in Gobo sub-division; Bangana, Kononaye and Tchalawa in Guere sub-division; Madalam, Sadamakou and Vagandja in kaïkaïsubdivision; Kalfou-center, Bougaye and Ngalaï in Kalfou subdivision. The analysis of variance permitted to realize the comparison between the different sites and the Fisher's LSD test allowed to make the comparison between the averages, and all was performed by Statgraphic + 5.0 Software. The total specific richness is 57 species belonging to 43 genera and 26 families out of 36 surveys that were carried out in our study area. The spescific diversity in Mayo-Danay varied according to the sites: the Shannon diversity index varies from 2.93 bits in the Bangana site to 4.82 bits in the center of Kalfou; the Pielou Evenness values varied from 0.45 in the Bangana site to 0.67 in the Kalfou-center site; the density was 14.89 ± 3.27 stems/ha in the Bangana site to 55.44 ± 10.49 stems/ha in the central Kalfou site. The basal area varied between 23.01 ± 13.17 m2/ha in the Kononaye site and 109.64 ± 22.93 m2/ha in the Vagandja site. The evaluation of the horizontal structure in the shape of an inverted J, and of the vertical in the shape of a bell shows a predominance of young subjects and especially of average individuals. The study made it possible to assess the structural characteristic of the woody settlement of the Mayo-Danay division. It thus reveals a regressive evolution of the woody stand with a very high proportion of species of small circumference and medium height. As part of a sustainable and rational management of natural resources in the Sudano-Sahelian environment, this study provides additional information on the current state of the woody populations of Mayo-Danay.

Abstract: This study aims at assessing three different packages for their benefits to the farmer’s extension intervention, based on the economic benefit to maximize profit gains. The comparisons of average differences in the on farm economic performance of the packages applied are compared to each other with cost and benefits using variable cost for production season of durum wheat producers. The result of one year on farm cost of production for the three packages varies accordingly; the total variable cost (TVC) per h-1 was found 14,645.25, 16,888.50 and 14,645.25 Ethiopian Birr for extension, ATA and farmer packages while the grain yield was found 3830, 4010 and 3130 Kg respectively. The net revenue gains from grain yield and straw was found 53,498 Birr from extension package; 54,600 Birr from ATA package and 41,126 Birr from farmer practiced trials. From the h-1 on farm trials with the recommended packages durum production was found profitable the net profit was found all attractive as the cost incurred didn’t outweigh the benefits gain. The price of grain yield at the present market prices was 17.00 Birr per Kg; while the straw price per Kg was found 3.75 Birr; on the other side seed price per Kg was 17 Birr. The break-even price for extension, ATA, and farmer practice packages varies as they had difference TVC, grain yield and TRV.

Performance of Cassava (Manihot esculanta. Crantz) Varieties at Different Areas of South Omo, Southern Ethiopia

Abstract: A field experiment involving four improved cassava (manihot esculanta, crantz) varieties and one local check was carried out at four different locations of South Omo zone (Kurea, Jinka on station, Geza and Shepi Kebelles) during the 2018 to 2019 cropping seasons under rain fed conditions to identify the best performing variety/ies to the target areas of South Omo zone. The cassava varieties included in the field experiment were four improved (Kelo, Qulle, Hawassa-04, Chancho) and a local check. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Growth, yield and yield components were studied. The result showed that plant height was significantly affected by variety while number of primary and secondary branch was not significantly influenced by variety. Total root number per plant, tuber weight and total yield per hectare also showed a significance difference among varieties. The highest total root yield per hectare (24.77 t/ha) was recorded from Hawassa-04 where as Chancho, Kelo, Qule and local check show no significance difference among each other. Therefore, it can be concluded that use of the improved cassava varieties such as Hawassa-04 is advisable and could be appropriate for cassava production in the test area even though further testing is required to put the recommendation on a strong basis.
